BUT IS IT ART? NOTES FROM THE RELUCTANT PORNOGRAPHER Bruce LaBruce
Via: Post Porn Politics 2006
Through a presentation of slides and film and video clips, I will be tracing the evolution of the use of explicit sexuality in my movies and art. Beginning with the hardcore homopunk fanzine I co-edited in the eighties, I will describe how I started incorporating found images from pornography in my work as a kind of political strategy in order to challenge the homophobia that had developed in the supposedly radical and progressive hardcore punk movement. I will explain how this developed into making my own sexually explicit images, photographic, literary, and cinematic, in the tradition of the gay avant-garde, and how this led to my involvement in the "legitimate" porn industry. Questions about the intersection of art and pornography, the mainstreaming of porn imagery, and the current state of the art of pornography will be addressed.
